Stags Fall Short In 3-1 Decision Against Lehigh
Sep 5, 2007
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Two second-half goals were the deciding factors in Lehigh University's 3-1 win over the Stags field hockey team at University Field. The Hawks outshot Fairfield by an 18-4 margin in the game.
Lehigh jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kalynn Davies recovered a rebound and pushed the shot to the near post past goalkeeper Liz Thomas at 10:16. The score remained 1-0 until midway through the second half when Lehigh improved its advantage with a goal at 48:08. Kara Zweizig converted a pass from Kelly Fox by unleashing a shot that caught the far corner.
The Stags made things interesting when Ashton DiDonato controlled a loose ball inside the circle and backhanded a shot past Lehigh goaltender Jessica Miller to make the score 2-1. Fairfield's comeback hopes were short lived though because Cassie Willard scored for Lehigh just 38 seconds later to put the game out of reach at 3-1.
Thomas made a season-high 11 saves for the Stags, while Miller secured two stops for the visitors. Lehigh also held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners, but did not score off any of those opportunities.
