Oct 27, 2007
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Stags scored the game's first goal, but the University of Maine answered with two goals just nine minutes apart to post a 2-1 win at University Field on Saturday afternoon.
Fairfield controlled play for most of the first half, but was unable to break through until the 13th minute when Anne Nieuwenhuis picked up a rebound and pushed the ball past Maine goalkeeper Rebecca Giroux. Amy Hosking took the initial shot from 10 feet, but Giroux put a pad on the ball for the save.
Maine came back with a little pressure of its own and tied the score when Kim MacDonald secured a rebound off a Liz Thomas save, and put the ball back on goal which beat the senior goalkeeper to the left corner.
The Bears took the lead for good nine minutes later when Amy Zdrojesky finished a penalty cornerat 28:34 to take a 2-1 lead. Nicole Emery started the play, sending the ball to Erin Reusch. Reusch stopped the ball and put it on the stick of Zdrojesky, who tallied the goal to the left side of the net.
Liz Thomas made four saves for the Stags, as she finished her career with 394 career saves. Her save total ranks third all-time in Fairfield field hockey history. Rebecca Giroux tallied four saves as well, and faced one more shot than Thomas. Fairfield owned a 9-8 advantage in shots for the game.
The game marked the end of the season for the Stags.
