Byrnes' Goal Lifts Stags To 1-0 Win Over Robert Morris
Oct 14, 2007
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Molly Byrnes scored her first game-winning goal of the season when she converted a penalty corner into a goal, leading the field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Robert Morris. Goalkeeper Liz Thomas tallied one save to secure her second shutout of the season.
The Stags controlled most of the game, spending a good portion of the 70 minutes in Robert Morris' defensive third of the field. Fairfield outshot the visiting team by a 7-1 count in the first half, but the Colonials one shot nearly resulted in a goal. Shawna Kushner released a shot on the right side of the circle that found its way on goal, but the ball kicked off the near-side post and was cleared out of danger.
The Fairfield offense continued to pressure the Robert Morris defense and managed to get five shots on goal. The team was given two penalty corners in the second half, nine overall for the game, but it was the final try that proved to be the difference.
Amy Hosking started the play and sent the ball to Emily Janis at the top of the circle. Janis stopped the ball and pushed a pass to Bynres on the left side of the circle. Byrnes shot went through the defense and hit the center of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Robert Morris sent most of its players to the front in the closing minutes to try and tie the game. The Colonials received three penalty corners late in the game, but the Stags defense was able to clear the ball each time.
Fairfield returns to action when it hosts Quinnipiac College on Wednesday, October 17 at University Field. Game time is slated for 4 pm.
