Sep 28, 2007
LORETTO, Pa. -- Molly Byrnes provided the offense, while goalkeeper Liz Thomas gave her teammates a solid effort between the pipes as the field hockey team posted a 3-2 win over St. Francis Pa. on the road. The victory marked Fairfield's first on the road, and improved the team's record to 2-8 overall.
The Stags jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Byrnes converted a pass from Ashton DiDonato just 10 minutes into the game. Byrnes doubled the Stags advantage when she secured a pass from Emily Janis, and turned the cross into her second goal of the game.
St. Francis cut the lead in half with a goal with under two minutes remaining in the first half, and gave the home team some momentum heading into the second half. Even though the Red Flash held a 7-1 advantage in second-half shots, Fairfield's defense kept St. Francis from tying the game. Thomas six saves in the final 35 minutes and finished the game with 10 stops.
Fairfield regained its two-goal advantage when Carly McCullough scored her first goal of the season, which was set up by a pinpoint pass from Chelsea Hicks. Just 17 seconds later, St. Francis answered McCullough's score with a goal of its own to make the score 3-2. The Red Flash tried tie the game late in the game, but the Stags defense did not yield the tying goal.
The Stags finish up their two-game road trip when they travel to Lock Haven University for a Sunday morning game.
