Thomas Saves Stags In 1-0 Home Win Over St. Joseph's
Sep 1, 2007
Liz Thomas made eight saves against St. Joseph's, but none bigger than her final stop of the game. The senior preserved the field hockey team's 1-0 win over the Hawks by stopping Jennifer Schultz's penalty stroke with 12.3 seconds remaining.
The two teams played an even first half with both squads having their opportunities. The Hawks had their best chance early in the game when a penalty corner provided two shots at the Fairfield goal, but Thomas was equal to the task with a pair of saves.
The Stags broke through 16 minutes into the game when they were awarded a penalty corner. The first shot was sent back into play by St. Joseph's goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer, but fell onto the stick of Jill Piacquadio. She quickly flicked a shot back on goal which found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks stepped up the pressure in the second half and had several opportunities throughout the 35-minute period. But, Thomas made five saves to keep her shutout intact. St. Joseph's looked as though it would tie the game with 15 seconds left, but the shot hit the post and bounced back into play. In the ensuing scramble, Fairfield was whistled for a foul which gave the visitors an opportunity to tie the score with a penalty stroke.
Schultz sent a shot to the left side of the goal, but Thomas dove and put her arms in front of the ball to stop the shot. The Stags ran out the final 12 seconds to win the game, giving them their first victory of the season.
The Stags return to action on September 5 when they host Lehigh University at 4 pm.
