KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team surrendered an early goal to the University of Rhode Island, and that goal proved to be the difference in the Rams 1-0 win. Stags goaltender Elizabeth Thomas made 11 saves to keep her teammates close.
All the offense came just 3-plus minutes into the game when Rhode Island's Jen Cetenich started the scoring opportunity inside the circle. She sent a pass to the far right side of the circle, which Jill Powers secured. Powers released a quick shot that just caught the near corner of the cage to push the home team in front at 1-0.
The Stags had opportunities in the second half, taking five shots in the final 35 minutes. But, Rams goaltender M.J. Britt turned away all of the scoring changes and finished with six saves. Rhode Island held a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Fairfield fell to 1-2 overall on the season, while Rhode Island evened up its record at 2-2.
