FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Megan Sieberg scored six minutes into the first overtime, leading Northwestern University (2-1) to a 4-3 victory over Fairfield University (1-2). Fairfield sent the game into overtime when Kelly Rath scored with 53 seconds left in regulation, her second goal of the game.
The Stags opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when Rath controlled a rebound and beat Wildcat goaltender Sherri Anne Nyberg. Fairfield almost doubled its advantage a few minutes later when a cross went through the goal mouth, but skipped past Briana Keene's fully-extended stick which kept the score at 1-0.
The two scoring opportunities gave the Northwestern offense an awakening, which resulted in three goals over a five-minute period of the first half. Jill Putnam tied the game at 29:05 when she pushed a rebound past Fairfield goaltender Lauren Callahan. Pullen gave the Wildcats their first lead less than a minute later when she converted a penalty corner pass from Meghan Small at 28:20.
The Wildcats took a 3-1 advantage with 24:33 left on the clock, thanks to Ellen Schlafy's unassisted goal. Fairfield pulled back to within a goal just two minutes later when Allison Mays accepted a pass from Briana Keene, and beat Nyberg to the low corner with 22:09 on the clock. Keene's assist gave her a point for the third straight game.
Mays' goal was the fourth goal in a seven-minute run between the two teams, and was the last score for more than 57 minutes. The game remained 3-2 until the final minute when Rath tied the game after Katie Braden sent a pass to the lower left part of the circle. Rath released a shot that beat Nyberg to the left corner, which set up the overtime period.
Northwestern won the game four minutes into the first overtime courtesy of Sieberg's goal, which was set up by Schlafy's pass from the top of the circle.
Callahan made 10 saves in the Fairfield goal, while Nyberg turned away four shots for the Wildcats.
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, September 4 when it hosts St. Joseph's University for a noon game.
