FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Kristen McCarthy scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime as Quinnipiac College defeated Fairfield University in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
Both teams took most of the first half to feel each other out, as neither squad generated much offense. The Bobcats started to create opportunities over the final 15 minutes of the half, but Fairfield goaltender Lauren Callahan turned away three shots to keep the game scoreless at half time.
The Stags came out on the attack at the beginning of the second half, and the aggressive play paid off for the home team. Fairfield received its first penalty corner just two minutes into the second half. Kelly Rath sent the ball to Rebecca Odenwaelder, who stopped the ball at the top of the circle for Caitlin Quinn. Quinn stroked a shot which caught the corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac tied the game with 25 minutes on the clock when McCarthy controlled a loose ball and the center of the box. She stick handled past a Fairfield defender and back-handed a shot past Callahan to tie the score at 1-1, the last goal of regulation.
The first overtime offered both teams several chances to win the game, but both goaltenders made saves to prolong the contest. The Bobcats outshot the Stags in overtime by a 7-6 count, the deciding shot coming with 1:55 remaining in the second overtime.
Quinnipiac set up a play inside the box, but Callahan broke up the opportunity. The ball rolled to the left side of the circle, where McCarthy caught up with it. She took two steps and released a shot into the open goal to end the game.
