PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Lauren Luft scored the game's first goal and assisted on the next two scores to lift Saint Joseph's University to a 6-0 win over the Fairfield University field hockey team. The Hawks used a four-goal second half to push the game out of reach for the Stags.
Luft started things quickly for the home team when she was set loose on a breakaway. She released a shot that beat Fairfield goaltender Elizabeth Thomas to the left side of the cage for a 1-0 lead. She set up the second goal with a pass which Nicole Antonini deflected into the right corner for a 2-0 advantage.
After halftime, Saint Joseph's took advantage of a quick start and scored its third goal off a corner pass by Luft, who found an opening inside the circle. The Hawks added three more goals in a 10-minute span that put them ahead by a 6-0 margin with 16 minutes remaining.
Thomas made two saves in the first half, before yielding to Lauren Callahan in the second half. Callahan turned away three shots on goal in her first action of the 2006 campaign.
The Stags complete their two-day stay in Philadelphia with a Sunday afternoon game at Temple University.
