FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Three Holy Cross goals in the opening 17 minutes proved too much for the Fairfield University field hockey team to overcome, as the Stags dropped a 4-1 decision to the Crusaders at University Field this afternoon.

The visitors broke through early when Tara Welch converted a cross from Sara O'Coin just five minutes into the game. Four minutes later, O'Coin netted the team's second goal after Carolyn Connelly pushed a pass through the Stags defense close to the Fairfield goal.

The Stags cut the deficit in half when Emily Janis sent a ball toward the Holy Cross goal, which was deflected into the air. Amanda Love hit the deflection on goal and beat the Crusader goaltender to the left side to make the score 2-1.

O'Coin gave Holy Cross its two-goal advantage once again when she accepted a pass from Welch, and one-timed the ball past Fairfield goaltender Elizabeth Thomas for a 3-1 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Welch was responsible for the only goal of the second half, courtesy of Laura Cohen's pass off a penalty corner.

Thomas made four saves for Fairfield in the first half, while Laura Callahan made three stops for the Stags in the second half. Erin Singleton tallied five saves for Holy Cross.
