FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Four Fairfield University field hockey players scored a goal in the second half, enabling the Stags to post a 5-0 win over Robert Morris University in a Northeast Conference game this afternoon. Emily Janis paced the attack by scoring the first two goals of the game.
Fairfield controlled the first half by outshooting the Colonials 13-4 through the first 35 minutes. Robert Morris goaltender Kate Dunlap recorded seven saves to keep the visiting team in the game.
The Stags came out in the second half and attacked the Robert Morris goal, keeping most of the action down that side of the field. Emily Janis finally broke through with a goal six minutes into the second half, converting a pass from Chelsea Hicks off a penalty corner.
Janis doubled the advantage with her fifth goal of the season, accepting a pass from Brittany Bates inside the circle and releasing a shot immediately to beat Dunlap on the right side. Three minutes later, the lead was pushed to 3-0 when Fairfield was awarded a penalty stroke with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Rebecca Odenwaelder approached the ball and beat Dunlap to the right side.
Fairfield kept the pressure up but Dunlap was equal to the task and kept the score at 3-0. Bates finally broke the 13-minute drought with a shot on left side of the goal, redirecting a pass from Alison Mays. The goal was Bates first of her college career. Mays finished the scoring with an unassisted goal with one minute remaining, getting a goal off a rebound.
Dunlap finished the game with 12 saves, while Lauren Callahan (two saves) and Elizabeth Thomas combined for the shutout in the Fairfield goal.
The Stags return to action on Sunday, October 2 when they host Monmouth College in a Northeast Conference game, beginning at 1 pm.
