FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- For the second straight game, the Fairfield University field hockey battled back in regulation only to come up short in overtime. On Sunday, Columbia University scored the game-winning goal in extra time to escape University Field with a 2-1 win.
The Lions took the lead with a goal in the first half, as Ramie Merrill scored in the 20th minute. Kim Branich and Liz Reeve set up the goal with crisp passing inside the circle, freeing up Merrill near the goal.
The Stags tied the game just two minutes into the second half with a set play off a penalty corner. Wendy Carbone started the play with a pass to the top of the circle, which Courtney O'Connor controlled and set up for Caitlin Quinn. Quinn finished the play with a stroke that beat Columbia goalkeeper Gena Miller to the low corner to make the score 1-1.
Columbia won the game with quick passes from Megan Davidson and Ariel Leon, that set up Merrill for her second goal of the afternoon.
Fairfield goaltender Elizabeth Thomas made 12 saves to keep the game close, as the junior faced 20 shots. The Stags tallied 10 shots in the contest, forcing Columbia goaltender Gena Miller to make five stops.
