LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Kelly Rath tallied two assists while three different Fairfield University student-athletes scored a goal in the Stags 3-1 win over Siena College in Northeast Conference field hockey action. The victory extended Fairfield's win streak to three games, and provided the team its fourth win in the last five games.
The Stags opened the scoring just five minutes into the game when Briana Keene and Emily Janis attacked the goal with a two-on-one break. Janis slipped a pass beyond the defender, which landed on Keene's stick. The sophomore beat Siena goaltender Jennifer Tesak for a 1-0 Fairfield lead.
The Saints were awarded a penalty stroke at the 27:12 mark, which Emily Winslow converted to tie the score at 1-1. The period ended with the score tied, even though Fairfield outshot the home team by a 9-4 count.
Fairfield used a quick goal in the second half as well when Rath set up Allison Mays with an entry pass from the corner. Mays quickly released a shot that found the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage. The lead increased to two goals after Courtney O'Connor deflected Rath's cross from the corner, making the score 3-1 at the 45:25 mark.
Goaltender Elizabeth Thomas made four saves for the Stags to earn the victory. Tesak made six saves for Siena, while the team was also credited with a defensive save.
