MONMOUTH, N.J. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team came up short against Monmouth University on the road this afternoon, as the Hawks scored three second-half goals to post a 3-1 win in Northeast Conference action.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, although the Hawks held a commanding 8-0 advantage in shots during the opening 35 minutes. Stags goaltender Elizabeth Thomas made two saves in the first half, and finished the game with three stops.
Monmouth opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half when Annie LoPresti sent a cross into the middle of the circle, which Kelly Crist controlled and sent past Thomas for a 1-0 lead. In the 56th minute of the game, Monmouth doubled its advantage when Maeve Hagen converted a pass from Bridget Greene off a corner to push the score to 2-0.
Fairfield cut the lead in half with nine minutes remaining in the game. Jaclyn Lawlor scored her first goal of the season when she sent a rebound back toward the goal which beat Hawks goaltender Chelsea Farley to the corner. Monmouth finished up the scoring when Hagen scored once again off a corner, as LoPresti set up the goal with her second assist on the day.
The Stags outshot Monmouth in the second half by a 6-5 margin, while Farley made three saves in the final 35 minutes.
Fairfield returns to action on Friday, October 13 when it continues its three-game road trip with a game against conference opponent Quinnipiac College.
