HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team used a late second-half goal to earn a second chance, and took full advantage of that opportunity with a double-overtime victory over Quinnipiac College in a Northeast Conference game. Senior Caitlin Quinn set up the game-tying goal, and tallied the deciding goal in the second overtime.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half when Jennifer Kinchla converted a cross from Jillian Carroll just 18 minutes into the game. Quinnipiac continued to test Fairfield goaltender Elizabeth Thomas throughout the first half, taking 12 shots in the opening 35 minutes. Thomas proved equal to the task by making seven saves and keeping the Stags within reach by intermission.

Fairfield did not muster many shots in the second half, taking just two attempts at the goal. However, one of those shots found the back of the cage when Quinn sent a shot toward goal which Emily Janis redirected with her stick, beating Jenna Grossman to tie the game at 1-1.

The overtime periods proved to be pretty much even with both teams taking two shots in the first 15 minutes, forcing the goaltenders to make one save each. Early in the second overtime, Fairfield put together the game-winning play when Quinn secured a rebound and pushed it past Grossman to end the game.

The victory enabled the Stags to halt a 10-game losing streak, dating back to a win over UMBC in September. Fairfield returns to action on Sunday when it travels crosstown for a match up with Sacred Heart University.
