FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team was selected fifth in the 2006 Northeast Conference (NEC) pre-season coaches poll. The poll was released today and was based upon the votes of the nine conference head coaches.
Lock Haven garnered the top spot with seven first-place votes, as the program becomes eligible for the NEC tournament this year. The Lady Eagles captured their second straight NEC regular season title a year ago, but were unable to participate due to the two-year waiting period required in moving to Division I.
Rider University and Sacred Heart tied for the second position in the poll, with the Pioneers garnering the remaining two first-place votes. Quinnipiac University was picked to finish fourth, followed by the Stags.
Monmouth University secured the sixth slot, with Robert Morris, Siena, and Saint Francis, Pa. rounding the nine-team conference.
Fairfield University, under Head Coach Jackie Kane, opens the 2006 season on the road, battling Boston University on August 27.
