FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team will try to even up its record and finish a three-game home stand when it hosts the University of Massachusetts on Wednesday at 4 pm. The Stags (2-3) split the first two games of their current home stand with a win over UMBC and a loss to unbeaten Drexel. The game will be broadcasted via the internet begining at 3:50 pm. The Stags continue to get strong play from their seniors, namely Courtney O'Connor and Caitlin Quinn. O'Connor took over the team lead for goals scored with her second goal in the win over UMBC. Quinn ranks second among her teammates with one goal and two points.
Goaltender Elizabeth Thomas posted her first shutout of the season in the UMBC win, and came back with six saves against Drexel last Sunday. She owns an impressive 1.71 goals against average as well as a .816 save percentage (40 saves).
UMass opened the season by dropping three games in California against Stanford, California, and Pacific. The team ended the three-game skid with an impressive victory over Harvard University (4-1) on September 4. Wednesday's game marks the team's first action in nine days.
Lauren Gillespie leads the team in scoring with six total points, all the result of three goals. Gina Sanders and Mary Shea place second on the team with three points, as each player has one goal and one assist. Sanders was credited with the game-winning goal against Harvard.
Becky Letourneau has spent all but 10 minutes in the UMass goal, registering a 2.86 goals against average with a .607 save percentage (17 saves).
Following the UMass game, Fairfield travels to Philadelphia for a pair of games this weekend, as it battles Saint Joseph's on September 16 and Temple on September 17.
