MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Fairfield University women's golf team opened the season by hosting the second annual Fairfield Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C., during the University's spring break.
The tournament, which took place on both the par 72 Possum Trot and Heather Glen golf courses, was won by Long Island University with a team score of 663 (+87) while the host Stags took third-overall with a 699 (+123). Charleston Southern finished five strokes ahead of Fairfield for second-place while Albany took fourth with a score of 702 (+126). Bellarmine University rounded out the field in fifth-place with a 779 (+203).
Fairfield was led by senior Allie Schick (North Kingston, R.I.) who shot identical rounds of 80 (+8) to finish one stroke back of the individual medallist, LIU's Veronica Lopes, to tie for second-place with Charleston Southern's Sara McFadden. Schick then won the tiebreaker with a match of cards on the second hole of the second round.
Junior Lindsey Ryan (Berlin, Conn.) tied for fifth-overall shooting 83 (+11) in both rounds while senior Jill Macari tied for 16th-place with a 183 (+39). Sophomore Amy Bordonaro (Berlin, Conn.) shot a two-day total of 190 (+46) to take 20th overall while classmate Catherine Alessi (Norwich, Conn.) rounded out the Stag golfers with a 226 for 25th-place.
Fairfield is back in action April 2-3 as they travel to Leesburg, Va., to take place in the Hoya Invitational at the Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt Club.
