
Women's Lacrosse Earns First Win, 13-12 Over Sacred Heart

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season, defeating Sacred Heart University 13-12 on Friday afternoon. The Stags improve to 1-1 on the year, while the Pioneers drop to 0-2.
The Stags led 12-10 on an Abbey Goodwin free position goal with 4:06 remaining in the game, but Sacred Heart netted goals with 2:05 and 1:33 remaining to knot the score. Erin Rigby would provide the game-winner 26 seconds later, scoring unassisted. The Pioneers would have a chance to tie the game in the final minute of play, but hit the post on a free position shot.
The Stags struck first, as Kristen Coleman netted her first goal of the afternoon, 58 seconds into the contest. The Pioneers would answer with four unanswered goals and five of the next six, for a 5-2 lead with 11:17 left in the first half. The Stags rallied with three straight goals, to know the game at 5-5. Sacred Heart would take a lead into the locker room however, as Katie Salamone netted the ball with 15 seconds left in the half.
Coleman started the scoring in the second half at the 28:35 mark, and Rebecca White added a gaol at 26:57, to put the Stags back ahead, 7-6. Sacred Heart would score to make it 7-7, before a pair of Coleman tallies put the Stags back ahead, 9-7. Again the Pioneers rallied, forcing a tie at 9-9.
Coleman finished the game with four goals, to go along with three grond balls. White finished the game with four points, on three goals and an assist. Cristin Lucena netted a pair of goals, while Kylee Martin had two assists.
Lauren Chatnik picked up the victory in goal for the Stags, making seven saves. Her Sacred Heart counterpart Chelsea Wagner made 15 saves.
Fairfield out shot its host 34-26 for the game, while winning 17 of 27 draw controls. The Stags did well clearing the ball, 15-18, and were 2-7 on free position shots. Sacred Heart cleared well also in the game, while scoring on 7-12 free position chances.
