Women's Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight, 13-9 Over Mount St. Mary's
Mar 15, 2008
The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team ran its winning streak to four games on Saturday, defeating host Mount St. Mary's College 13-9 in a non-conference road game. The Stags improve to 4-1 on the year, while The Mount falls to 3-4.
The win gives the Stags a program-record four non-conference wins and the best start in program history, eclipsing the 3-2 start in 2006. It marks the sixth time in the program's history that the Stags have won four or more games, with a program-best eight consecutive wins in 2002.
Kristen Coleman, five points, and Erin Rigby, four points, powered the Stags offense, as the team had to come from behind for the win. The Mount score twice in the first 3:40 of action to take a 2-0 lead, but the Stags did not take long to answer. Rigby fed Abbey Goodwin at 23:31 to put the Stags on the board. Rigby then netted back-to-back goals, 15 seconds apart, to put Fairfield ahead momentarily, 3-2. The Mount evened the score at 19:19 and Cristin Lucena netted a goal with 17:04 left in the half to put Fairfield ahead 4-3. The Mount scored twice at 13:16 and 12:22 to take a 5-4 lead with 12:22 left in the first half, but the Stags did not let up. Kylee Martin tied the score with 7:00 left in the half and Rigby put the Stags ahead with an unassisted goal with 1:48 to play, for a 6-5 advantage at the break.
Mount struck first again in the second half, equaling the score 6-6 1:50 into the half, but the Stags took over from that point. Coleman scored back-to-back goals, followed by tallies from Goodwin and Nina Tedeschi to open a 10-6 lead. After a Mount tally, Coleman scored again with 19:23 left to reassert the four-goal advantage. Mount cut it to three with 12:50 to play, but Coleman, at 10:29 and Rebecca White at 6:56, put the game away.
Lauren Chatnik made six saves in minding the net for the entirety for the Stags, to earn the win. Chatnik now has 16 career wins, third all-time and two shy of equaling the program record in that category. Jane Karger made eight saves in the loss for The Mount.
Coleman scored four times for the Stags, with one assist, while Rigby added three goals and an assist in the win. Coleman also had four draw controls, a team-high in the win. Goodwin netted a pair of goals, including netting her lone eight-meter attempt.
Caroline Madrak had an impressive contest as well, with a team-high six ground balls and a team-best four caused turnovers. Kelly Barnes had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Tedeschi had a goal and an assist with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Fairfield out shot The Mount, 23-18 for the game, and had fewer turnovers, 29-23, in the contest as well. The Stags cleared the ball well, 19-24 for the game and held a 23-18 advantage in ground balls, while also winning 12-24 draw controls.
Fairfield returns home on Wednesday, March 19, hosting Lehigh at 4 p.m.
