Mar 26, 2008

Fourteen different players tallied a goal or an assist as the Fairfield University women's lacrosse team scored a single-game program record goal total in a 25-11 win over Wagner College on Wednesday.  The win is the sixth straight for the Stags, who continue the program's best-ever start, improving to 6-1, while the Seahawks fall to 1-7.

The 25-goal out burst surpassed the previous mark, set April 2, 2000, when the Stags defeated Canisius 23-2.  It is also just the third time that the Stags have scored 20 or more goals in a game, having defeated LeMoyne 22-12 on April 21, 2001.

Fairfield dominated the game from the outset as Cristin Lucena scored two goals, 20 seconds apart, and had four total, as the squad opened a 7-0 lead 7:58 into the contest.  Wagner scored six of the games next nine goals, to close to within 10-6 with 11:25 to play in the first half.  Over the final 7:52 of the first-half the Stags out scored its host 6-1, to take a 16-7 lead at the intermission.

The second half started with back-to-back Stag tallies, but the two teams traded goals, 3-3 in the first 10:08, with the Stags holding a 19-10 lead.  Fairfield scored four straight in just under six minutes to put the game away, finishing the game on a 6-1 run.

Lucena and Kristen Coleman led the Stags offensive attack with five points apiece.  Coleman had a pair of goals and a team-high three assists.  Of the 14 players who recorded a point in the game for Fairfield, 10 of them scored multiple points.  Abbey Goodwin and Rebecca White each had three goals and an assist for four points.

Amy Kelleher and Erin Rigby both scored twice in the game, and shared the team-lead in draw controls, with White, winning three draw controls each.  Kim Fuchs and Coleman had two caused turnovers each for the Stags.

Brittany Bare finished with three points, two goals, while Katie Reardon and Kate MacKay each had a goal and an assist.  Katie von Hoffmann, Mary Vallely and Kelly Barnes each had one goal in the win.

Lauren Chatnik earned the win in goal for the Stags, with eight saves.

Fairfield continues its four-game road trip on Saturday, as it begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League play at Marist College, the preseason pick of the league's coaches to claim the conference crown.
