Women's Lacrosse Win Streak Reaches Seven With 11-10 Overtime Victory At Marist

The Fairfield University women’s lacrosse team won its seventh straight contest on Saturday, defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Marist college, 11-10 in overtime.  The Stags improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Red Foxes fall to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference action.

The game was back-and-forth throughout with the end of regulation coming with the score knotted 8-8.  Like in the first half, Marist struck first, 11 seconds into the overtime period, to take a 9-8 advantage.  The Stags would respond with a pair of goals, one from Abbey Goodwin 90 seconds into overtime, and one from Erin Rigby 41 seconds later.  Marist would knot the score at 10-10, 14 seconds before the team’s switched ends.
 
The Stags, playing their second overtime game in its last three outings, scored the lone goal of the goal of the second portion of overtime.  Kristen Coleman won the draw control that started the final 3:00 of action, and went to goal, putting home an unassisted goal with 2:47 to play, for the 11-10 advantage.  The Stags would allow just one shot the rest of the way, which Lauren Chatnik saved, to earn the win.

Coleman finished with a game-high five points for the Stags, netting a pair of goals and dishing out three assists.  Rigby had four goals for the Stags, and Goodwin also had four points, with three goals and an assist.  Rebecca White had a goal and an assist for the Stags, while Cristin Lucena netted one goal.

Chatnik minded the net for the entire 66:00 of action for Fairfield, making six saves to earn the win.  The win is the 19th of her Fairfield career, putting her alone in first place in program history.

Marist was led by the two-goal, three-assist effort of Lindsey Diener, while Kate Noftsker added two goals and one assist.  Liz Burkhard made 16 saves for the Red Foxes, while allowing 11 goals.

The Stags out shot the host Red Foxes 40-27 for the game, while also winning 19 of 25 draw controls in the game.  Fairfield committed 24 turnovers, to 18 by Marist.

Fairfield continues it season on Wednesday, April 2, traveling to UConn for a 3 p.m. contest, looking to equal the program-record for consecutive wins.  The 2002 Stags won eight games on its way to a 9-8 mark, a streak that was snapped 12-10 by the Huskies in overtime.
