Coleman, Chatnik Earn MAAC Weekly Awards
Mar 31, 2008
The Fairfield University women’s lacrosse team had a pair of players recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League after leading the Stags to a 2-0 week. Kristen Coleman (Potomac, Md.) was named the offensive player of the week and Lauren Chatnik (Schenectady, N.Y.) was named defensive player of the week.
Coleman, a graduate of Holy Cross High School, led the Stags in scoring on the week with 10 points. She netted four goals and six assists in wins over Wagner and Marist. In the win at Marist on Saturday she finished with two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, and with three assists. Coleman had equaled those numbers in the Stags non-conference win over Wagner. She added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls on the week as well.
Coleman is leading the Stags in all three offensive categories through eight games. She has tallied 37 total points, the highest total in the league this season. The rookie has tallied five or more points in each of the team’s last four games. She ranks first in the MAAC with 25 goals and is among the league leaders with 12 assists.
Chatnik, a graduate of Guilderland High School, became the school’s all-time leader in wins on the week, earning both victories, giving her 19 for her career. She played all 126 minutes in net for the Stags, making 14 total saves. In the MAAC opener at Marist she made six saves, with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover. She made eight saves in the non-conference win at Wagner.
The Stags have earned at least one of the MAAC’s weekly awards in each of the five weeks that they have been playing this season. Coleman earns her second offensive player of the week honor, third for the team, after earning the rookie accolade each of the last two weeks. For Chatnik it is her first weekly award of the week, and the team’s fourth defensive honor this season, one being awarded to Coleman.
The Stags are off to the best start in program history with a
7-1 overall record, and are now 1-0 in MAAC play. Fairfield
will take its seven-game win streak on the road on Wednesday to the
University of Connecticut, for a 3 p.m. contest.
