Apr 4, 2008

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team continued its winning ways Friday night, this time in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League play, defeating Manhattan College 16-12 in Riverdale, N.Y.

The win is the ninth straight for the Stags, who improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.  The winning streak is the longest in program history, surpassing the eight-game stretch that came during the 2002 season.

Manhattan tallied the first goal of the game, 1:31 into the first half for a 1-0 lead.  Fairfield would take over the game from that point on however, scoring four straight and 10 of the next 12 goals.

Katie von Hoffmann got the Stags on the board at the 26:55 mark and was followed by tallies from Kristen Coleman, Caroline Madrak and Abbey Goodwin.  The Jaspers scored at 18:14, to make it 4-2, but the Stags answered quickly with a second goal from Coleman and a Cristin Lucena tally.  Manhattan scored to make it 6-3 with 10:20 left in the first half, and 16 seconds later Coleman completed her hat trick for the 7-3 advantage.

That goal started another four-goal Fairfield run, with goals from Kylee Martin, Goodwin and Erin Rigby.  The Stags led 10-3 with 4:27 to play in the first half.  After a pair of Manhattan goals, Brittany Bare wrapped up the first half scoring for Fairfield, and gave the Stags an 11-5 halftime lead.

Fairfield began the second half on a run as well, scoring the first two goals and opening the half with a 5-2 run, taking a 16-7 lead with 12:44 to play.  Lucena scored what would become the game-winning goal at the 23:03 mark, and Coleman netted her game-high fourth goal for the team's final tally.  Manhattan finished the game on a 5-0 run, all in the final 5:27, making it a 16-12 final.

Coleman finished with five points, adding an assist to her four goals, to lead the team.  Rigby tallied four points in the contest, with a goal and three assists, as well as four draw controls, a team-best.  Goodwin, Lucena and Martin each scored twice in the Stags victory.

Lauren Chatnik earned the win in net for Fairfield, making 11 saves.  Her Manhattan counterpart Allison Brown made 17 saves in the loss.

Manhattan received a pair of three-goal efforts from Tara Convery and Hellen Kerrisk.  Kerrisk added an assist for four points, while Emilia Ward also had four points, with a goal and three assists.

The Stags out shot the Jaspers 43-31 for the contest, with a 24-16 advantage in the second half.  The Stags also held an advantage in draw controls, 17-13, and ground balls, 23-17.  Fairfield caused five of the Manhattan 16 turnovers, while committing 20 turnovers of its own.

Fairfield returns home on Sunday, looking for its 10th straight victory, hosting MAAC Lacrosse League foe Iona College at 1 p.m. on Lessing Field.
