Women's Lacrosse Runs Win Streak To 11 With 21-14 Triumph At Holy Cross

For the 11th time in as many outings the Fairfield University women's lacrosse team came away with a victory, defeating host Holy Cross 21-14 on the road Wednesday afternoon.  The win improves the Stags record to 11-1 on the year, while the Crusaders drop to 4-9.

Kristen Coleman got the Stags on the board early, 1:50 into the game, but Holy Cross responded quickly, tallying the next two goals, for a 2-1 advantage.  Kylee Martin knotted the score with 22:39 left in the first half, to which the Crusaders responded 29 seconds later to retake the lead.  Fairfield tied the score, 3-3, the third tie of the game, on an Abbey Goodwin goal with 21:03 left in the half.  Goodwin scored again to give Fairfield a 4-3 lead, and the two teams alternated goals after that, tying at 4-4 (18:06), 5-5 (16:15) and 6-6 (12:52).

The Stags would take over from that point however, with a 5-0 run over a 4:12 span, beginnign with a Kim Fuchs goal with 6:35 left in the half.  Erin Rigby would then tally three straight goals, at 4:45, 4:01 and 2:46, for the 11-6 lead.  Martin ended the run with 2:23 left in the half for the five goal advantage.  The Crusaders snapped the run with 85 seconds remaining before the half, to close to within 11-7 at the intermission.

The second half followed a similiar pattern, as Coleman struck early, 44 seconds into the half, and Holy Cross responding.  The Crusaders out scored the Stags 5-2 from the 27:44 mark through the 20:45 mark, to close within two goals, 14-12.  Coleman, at 19:52, and Rigby at 19:11, pushed the lead back to four goals 16-12.  Holy Cross scored with 16:10 to play in the half, but Rigby answerd with 12:34 to play, for the 17-13 advantge.

Neither team would score for over 10 minutes, until Rebecca White ended the drought with 2:22 to play.  Martin scored with 52 seconds left for a 19-13 edge.  Fuchs scored with seven seconds to play and White with one tick on the clock for the final margin.

Rigby led the way in the game with eight total points, including a game-high six goals.  Coleman netted five goals, including the game-winner, and had an assist, for six total points.  Goodwin, two goals and two assists and Martin, three goals and one assist, each finished with four points.  White and Fuchs had two goals each in the game, and Katie von Hoffmann scored once.

Lauren Chatnik earned the win in goal for the Stags making 11 saves.  Her Holy Cross counterpart made 11 saves in the contest.

Coleman led the team with three caused turnovers, with the team recording 11 for the contest.  Kelly Barnes led the team with four ground balls, a quarter of the team's 16 total for the game.

Fairfield will continue its three-game road stand on Friday, when it takes on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Niagara University.  The road trip ends on Sunday at MAAC foe Canisius.
