Women's Lacrosse Falls One Goal Short In MAAC Final, 10-9 To Marist

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team saw its 2008 season come to an end in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship game, falling 10-9 to second-seeded Marist College.

The Stags built an 8-4 halftime lead, but could not manage a goal for nearly the entire second half.  Marist scored six goals over the first 20 minutes of the second half to take a 10-8 advantage. 

Cristin Lucena would bring the Stags within a goal, netting a pass from Kristen Coleman with 46 seconds remaining.  Fairfield would win the ensuing draw, but a shot with eight seconds remaining was blocked jand a foul called, awarding the ball to the Red Foxes, who ran out the clock.

Fairfield had three players named to the All-MAAC Tournament Team.  Coleman who had two goals and an assist on Sunday, was joined by Lauren Chatnik, six saves in the title game, and Kelly Barnes.

Abbey Goodwin and Kim Fuchs each scored a pair of goals for the Stags, with Goodwin adding two assists. 

Kelly Barnes put the Stags on the board at the 18:39 mark, cutting to the middle and scoring a pass from Abbey Goodwin.  Kim Fuchs put the Stags ahead 2-1 midway through the half, with an assist to Katie von Hoffmann.  Marist tied the score on a Liz Falco goal with 12:53 remaining in the first half.  The tie lasted until Kristen Coleman scored unassisted 79 second later.  Erin Rigby touched net for the first time in the game with 10:46 to play, after Lauren Chatnik robbed Marist's Kellie Considine at point blank range.

Lindsey Diener scored on a free position shot with 7:46 left in the first half to make the score 4-3.  After Marist won the ensuing draw, Barnes intercepted a pass which led to Coleman's second tally of the game, and a 5-3 lead with 5:33 in the half.

Goodwin gave the Stags a 6-3 lead with 2:44 to play.  After getting defended off a free position attempt, she picked the ball out of the air and put it home.  Marist cut it to 6-4 with 1:32 left, but Fairfield would score twice in the final 82 sceonds.  Kim Fuchs put home a pass from Goodwin with 1:22 left and Coleman scored with three seconds to play for an 8-4 halftime advantage.

The Stags MAAC Championship game appearance is the third in the program's history.

Fairfield posted a 17-2 record under first year head coach Beth Loffredo.  It marked the most wins in a single-season in program history.  The 17 wins was the longest win streak of any team at the Division I level this season.
