The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener, 8-7, in a non-conference game at Villanova University on Saturday. The Stags fall to 0-1, while the Wildcats improve to 1-0.

After Villanova scored first, 2:02 into the contest, before Sarah Masterson scored the Stags first goal of the season, 14 seconds later. Amy Neville scored on a free position shot at 9:42, for the 2-1 lead. The Wildcats scored goals at 19:02 and 26:38 to take a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

Fairfield responded with the first two goals of the second half. Rebecca White netted a goal 1:20 into the half, and Abbey Goodwin 10 seconds later, for a 4-3 lead. The Wildcats scored back-to-back goals, at 34:22 and 37:41, to retake the lead. The Stags responded again, with two more goals. White scored her second goal at 42:03 and Kylee Martin netted the go ahead goal at 43:45. The Wildcats scored three straight to take an 8-6 advantage at 52:17. Rookie Erin Rigby netted a goal at 59:41 to give the Stags the final score 8-7.

Lauren Chatnik minded the net for the entire 60 minutes for the Stags, making eight saves allowing the eight goals. White had her two goals to lead the Stags, while Goodwin and Sarah Masterson each had two points on a goal and an assist.

Villanova out shot the Stags 24-22 in the game, and had a 41-25 advantage on ground balls. Fairfield was 1-4 on free-position shots, while Villanova was 2-9. Both teams committed 18 turnovers.

The Stags open the home portion of their season on Monday, February 26, when they host Yale at 5 p.m at Alumni Field.
