The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest, 10-6, to visiting American University this afternoon on Alumni Field. The Stags fall to 2-4 on the year, while the Eagles improve to 3-4.
American built a 6-2 lead at the intermission as six different players touched net during the period. Fairfield rallied in the early part of the second half. Ashley Chappell scored 51 seconds into the period, to cut the lead to 6-3. Erin Rigby netted her second goal of the game at the 24:55 mark, as the Stags crept within two goals. The Eagles rattled off four straight goals in a 6:23 span, starting with a Lauren Aksionoff tally at 22:24. Gina Ibello scored at 21:41, and Jackie Lane scored at 21:07 and 15:59 to round out the America scoring. The Stags netted goals at 14:15, Kylee Martin, and 11:39, Abbey Goodwin, but could get no closer.
The Stags forced 35 Eagle turnovers in the game, committing only 31 of their own. Mary Vallely had a strong defensive effort, with seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls. The Stags recorded 39 total ground balls, while the Eagles had 37.
Lauren Chatnik minded the net for the Stags, making six saves, playing the entire game. Her American counterpart, Kristine Vida, made 10 saves, allowing six goals, in playing the entire contest.
Goodwin led the Stags with two goals and an assist, while Rigby netted a pair of goals. Jackie Lane scored three times for the Eagles, while Askionoff and Ibello each netted a pair of goals. Anne Marie Person had two assists and a goal for American.
The Stags will return to action on Saturday, March 17, hosting Mount St. Mary's at 11 a.m. on Alumni Field.
