The Fairfield University women's lacrosse second half rally fell one goal short, dropping a non-conference road game to host Lehigh University, 11-10, Tuesday afternoon. The Stags fall to 3-5 with the loss, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 2-4.
The Stags trailed 6-3 at the intermission, and then allowed the first two goals of the second half, to fall behind 8-3. Amy Neville started the Stags come back with a tally at the 25:53 mark, the first of three straight goals, to close to within 8-6 with 14:42 to play. Lehigh answered with back-to-back goals, for the 10-6 edge, but again the Stags would rally. Rebecca White scored at 11:01 and 10:44, and Sarah Masterson touched net at 7:12, to make the score 10-9. Lehigh got its 11th goal at 3:47, and Lara Hannigan netted her first of the year at 1:36, but the Stags could not knot the score.
Kylee Martin scored three times for the Stags, as well as adding an assist, for a team-best four points. White had two goals on the day, as did Neville. Hannigan dished out two assists to go along with her assist.
Lauren Chatnik made 10 saves in the contest, minding the net for the entire 60 minutes of action. Kelsy Ferris made 15 saves for the host.
The Stags out shot their host 30-24 in the game, including 17-10 in the second half. Fairfield went 4-9 on free position shots, while Lehigh was just 1-2. Lehigh held a 23-15 edge in ground balls and a 15-8 edge in draw controls.
The Stags being Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League play in its next outing, Saturday, March 24 against Marist at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Alumni Field.
