The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-11 decision to host Yale University in New Haven, Conn., this afternoon. With the loss the Stags fall to 3-5 on the year, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-4 with the win.
Beth Loffredo provided the Stags with a high-note on the day, as she became the program's all-time leading goal scorer with her two tallies. She tied Jessica Conohan's record with her first tally, and unassisted goal with 22:33 to play in the first half. The record setting 121st goal of her career came on a free position shot in the second half, with 4:48 to play. The two points also moves her past Colleen Cunningham into second place all-time with 154 career points.
The Bulldogs started the game with four straight goals, before Loffredo put the Stags on the board with the record tying goal, and a 4-1 deficit. Yale answered with a pair of goals, before Mary Vallely scored with 12:41 to play in the half, and the deficit was 6-1. The Bulldogs again answered the Stag tally with two of their own, and an 8-1 edge before Sarah Masterson scored unassisted at 6:45. After another Bulldog two-goal run, Masterson ended the scoring in the first half with a tally with 58 secconds remaining, to make the halftime score 10-4 Yale.
Yale started the second half in similiar fashion, with four goals in the first 4:35 to push the lead to 14-4. Kylee Martin, who did not score in a game for the first time this season against Boston College, returned to the box score, with back-to-back goals at 23:20 and 21:54 to start a Stags rally. Masterson netted her third goal at 20:12 and the run was 3-0 for Fairfield. Yale netted a goal at 16 minutes, but Julia Poli (14:46) and Abbey Goodwin (13:59) followed with consecutive goals and the Stags were back within six, 15-9.
After nearly seven scoreless minutes, Yale scored twice in 97 seconds to stem the Stags run and take a 17-9 lead. Loffredo's record breaking goal came at 4:48, but was followed by back-to-back Yale tallies. Poli wrapped up the scoring wtih 1:51 to play, and the score 19-11.
Masterson scored three goals for the Stags. while Loffredo, Poli, and Martin each had two. Vallely and Goodwin scored once each, while Ashley Chappell had the Stags lone assist on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs were powered by the six-point effort of Carli Vogler, who scored five goals and had an assist. Jenn Warden and Lauren Talyor both had four points on three goals and an assist for Yale.
Kristin Genovese started in net for the Stags and took the loss, alloweing five goals in 12:40 of action, while recording two saves. Lauren Chatnik played the finla 47:20, stopping nine shots, while allowing 14.
The Stags won 14 of 32 draw controls in the game, while commiting 16 turnovers, to the 12 of the Bulldogs. Yale out shot Fairfield 45-23 in the contest and won the ground ball battle, 23-18.
Fairfield returns home on Saturday, ending a four-game road swing, when it opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League play. The Stags will host LeMoyne at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and then Siena on Sunday, at noon. The Stags are 2-2 at home this season.
Three Bulldogs combined to make eight saves in the game. Ellen Cameron played the 30:00 of the first half, earning the win, with six saves and four goals against. Lonnie Sarnell allowed five goals, making two saves, while Casey Littlefield allowed two goals in 7:06, without notching a save.
