Fairfield, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-6 win over visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Siena College, this afternoon on Alumni Field. The win improves the Stags to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play, while the Saints fall to 1-9 on the year and 0-3 in conference action.
The contest was closely contested throughout, with no team having more than a two goal lead, and Siena never leading by more than a single goal. Neither team would score in the final 17:30 of the game. The teams took just 13 shots combined in the second half, seven by Fairfield, who out shot the Saints 23-20 for the game.
The Stags struck first as Beth Loffredo netted a goal at 26:14 of the first half, on a free position shot. The Saints answered with goals at 24:20 and 23:35 to take their first lead of the game, 2-1. The teams would alternate goals, tying 2-2 (22:22), 3-3 (16:07) and 4-4 (5:09). Fairfield would net the final goal of the first half, as Ashley Chappel scored off of an Alyssa Vecchione assist, for the 5-4 lead, that would not be relinquished.
Rebecca White wasted little time in giving the Stags breathing room in the second half, scoring 22 seconds into the period, for a 6-4 advantage. Lynn Harkins got Siena back within one, 6-5, at the 24:00 mark, but White answered with her second of the half at 22:40. Lindsey Rosencrans scored the Saints final tally at the 18:55 mark, making it 7-6, leading to Loffredo's insurance goal with 17:31 to play.
Stags goalkeeper Lauren Chatnik had her best game as a collegiate player, tying her season-high with 10 saves. She allowed only six goals in earning the win. Her Siena counterpart Bethany Zimmer allowed eight goals while recording seven saves.
Loffredo led the Stags offense, finishing with four points, on three goals and an assist. She also had two caused turnovers in the win. Rebecca White was the only other Stag with multiple points, scoring twice, and assisting on a third. Dana Frey recorded four ground balls and a game-high three draw controls.
Lauren Ritchie, who had two goals and an assist in the game, led the Saints. Four others each scored one goal each in the contest.
The Stags are back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when they host Columbia. That game will be played at 3:30 p.m. and is scheduled for Alumni Field
