Fairfield, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team allowed Columbia University to tally three unanswered goals in the final 8:07 of play to pull out a 12-11 win this afternoon, in a non-conference game played at Alumni Field. The Stags fall to 4-7 overall while the Lions improve to 5-5.
The Stags took an 11-9 lead at the 10:17 mark when Mary Vallely scored on a free position shot, however that would be the last tally for Fairfield in the contest. Columbia scored at 8:07 on a Carrie Anderer free position shot and then tied the game with 3:22 to play, when Elyse Pultz netted a free position shot. Marisa Marcellino scored the game-winner, unassisted, with 1:56 to play. The Stags had chances in the final minutes, including a pair of free position attempts in the final 60 seconds, but could not convert.
Beth Loffredo and Abbey Goodwin each scored three goals for the Stags with Loffredo also adding an assist. Sarah Masterson had three points as well, with two goals and an assist. Vallely touched net twice, while Ashley Chappell added a goal and Lara Hannigan an assist, for the Stags.
Fairfield did not lead in the game until Loffredo netted her final goal, with 13:57 to play, to give the Stags a 10-9 edge. Neither team ever led by more than two goals in the contest. The halftime scored was 8-6 Columbia.
Lauren Chatnik played the entire game in net for the Stags, allowing 12 goals, while recording nine saves. Emma Mintz picked up the win for the Lions, entering the game with 18:04 to play. She made three saves, allowing two goals in relief of Marcela Calidonia, who started and made six saves in 41:56.
Kate Lombard, Katie Warner and Anderer each finished the game with three points for the Lions. Lombard and Anderer did it with three goals, while Warner had two goals and an assist.
Fairfield out shot the visiting Lions, 31-24 and recorded more ground balls, 35-22, in the game. Draw controls was nearly even, with a 13-12 advantage for Columbia.
The Stags will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Niagara for a 1 p.m. contest.
