The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-9 decision to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League host Canisius College today in Buffalo, N.Y. The Stags fall to 4-8 overall and are now 2-2 in league play, while the Griffs improve to 9-5 and 4-0 in conference action.
With the score tied 6-6 at the intermission Lara Hannigan gave the Stags the lead at 7-6, with a goal just 2:09 into the second half. The Griffs responded at that point, scoring six unanswered goals to take a 12-7 lead. Sarah Masterson stopped the Griff run with a free position goal with 5:54 to play in the game, but it wasn't enough, as Canisius tagged on a pair of insurance goals. Amy Neville scored with 11 seconds to play to wrap up the offense.
Masterson led the Stags on the afternoon with four points, as she scored three times and dished out one assist. Rookie Abbey Goodwin continued to contribute to the attack, touching net twice in the contest. Hannigan also had two goals in the contest for Fairfield.
Lauren Chatnik minded the net for the entire game, finishing with 10 saves, while allowing 14 goals. Her Canisius counterpart, Rasheeda Brenton also recorded 10 saves, while allowing nine goals, for the win.
Alana Chan had six points to pace the Griffs, scoring once and dishing out five assists. Lauren Walsh had three goals, as did Whitney Card. Walsh also added an assist. Ashley Gray touched net four times for the host.
Canisius out shot the Stags 31-24 in the contest, including 17-7 in the second half. The Griffs also won the ground ball battle, 33-20.
The Stags won 13 of 24 contested draws on the afternoon.
Canisius jumped out on top with three goals in the first 5:42 of play, whoever the Stags answered. Goodwin netted her first of the day 6:53 into the game to make it 3-1. After a Griff goal at 9:38, Masterson scored her first of the day, which was again answered by the Griffs, and made the score 5-2.
Hanningan's first tally, 20:37 into the first half jumpstarted a 4-0 Fairfield run over a 6:09 span, to give the Stags a 6-5 advantage. Masterson, Mary Vallely and Goodwin, all scored in the stretch. The Griffs tied the game with a goal with 80 seconds left in the first half.
Fairfield is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Worcester, Mass. for the non-conference finale, at Holy Cross.
