Box Score

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team scored seven second-half goals to earn a 13-9 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Canisius College tonight on Lessing Field. The Stags improve to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Griffs fall to 4-9 on the year and 1-3 in conference action.

The Stags led 6-2 when Sara Masterson netted her second goal at the 8:12 mark of the first half, but the Griffs scored the final four goals of the half, the last with 19 seconds, to knot the score at 6-6. Canisius would strike first in the second half to take a 7-6 advantage, 48 seconds into the half.

Fairfield took control at that point, scoring five straight goals, the first from Kylee Martin at 28:46. Rebecca White scored at 27:22 and Abbey Goodwin followed at 26:14, for the 9-7 edge. Mary Vallely would score at the 20:07 mark with the eventual game-winning goal. Martin added another goal 27 seconds later, to complete the run. The Griffs scored at 19:10, to make it 11-8, before Katie von Hoffmann netted a pair of goals to ice the win.

Lauren Chatnik played well for the Stags in goal, as her team was out shot 35-32. Chatnik made 15 saves, including nine in the first half of play. Rasheeda Brenton made 11 saves in the game for Canisius, allowing 13 goals.

Martin led all scorers with four points, netting three goals and dishing out one assist. Masterson had two goals and an assist, while Ashley Chappell had two assists. Von Hoffmann and White both scored twice for the Stags. Amy Kelleher recorded four caused turnovers and had six ground balls.

Canisius received two goals apiece from Ashley Gray, Brett Poissant, and Chelsea Martinez. The Griffs won 14 of 24 draw controls, but were 0-5 on free position shots. The Stags had a 22-20 advantage on ground balls, but committed 20 turnovers, to the 17 of Canisius.

Fairfield had 11 caused turnovers in the game, while Canisius caused 12.

The Stags play their final home game of the regular season on Sunday, at 3:30 p.m. against Niagara University. The Fairfield seniors will be honored prior to the game.
