The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-9 decision to LeMoyne College on Sunday in its regular season finale. The Stags finish the regular season with an 8-9 mark and a 5-2 league record, while the Dolphins finish at 13-4 and 7-0 in the MAAC.
LeMoyne, which out shot the Stags 37-28 in the contest, scored the games first two goals. The Stags would respond scoring three straight, one each from Amy Neville, Ashley Chappell and Sarah Masterson, for a 3-2 lead 8:06 into the first half. The Dolphins scored back-to-back goals for the 4-3 lead. Kim Fuchs tied the score 4-4 at 13:42. LeMoyne retook the lead at 5-4 with 9:49 to play, but again the Stags tied the score, on a Neville goal with 1:56 to play. LeMoyne dominated the final 83 seconds of the firt half, scoring four goals to take a 9-5 lead.
The Dolphins run continued in the second, with four of the first five goals, to take a 13-6 edge with 18:06 to play. Kylee Martin scored twice, at 14:34 and 13:40 to cut the deficit to five goals, 13-8, but LeMoyne netted three straight to double the Stags, 16-8. Nina Tedeschi netted the final goal of the game with 56 seconds to play.
Neville finished with two goals and an assist, to lead the Stags. Chappell had three points, with a goal and two assists, while Martin and Masterson both scored twice.
Lauren Chatnik played the first 48 minutes for the Stags, allowing 14 goals and making 10 saves. Jessica Parnell minded the net for the final 12 minutes, with three saves and two goals allowed.
Fairfield won 15 of the 26 draw controls in the game, three by the Stags all-time leader in that category, Masterson. Fairfield was 0-4 on free position shots, and the team committed 22 turnovers, to 19 for the Dolphins. The Stags cleared 15-16 on the day and committed fewer fouls, 20-15.
The Stags are the number two seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament, Friday and Sunday, April 27-29 at Iona College. The Stags will play the third-seed, Marist, while LeMoyne, the top-seed, will play number-four Manhattan. Start times will be announced on Monday.
