The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team, seeded-second, was upset by third seeded Marist College, 13-8, in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Lacrosse League Tournament, held at Iona College.
The Stags end the season at 8-10 overall, having posted a 5-2 mark in MAAC play during the regular season. The Red Foxes improve to 10-5 on the year, also having gone 5-2 in MAAC regular season play.
Abbey Goodwin scored the Stags first goal of the game, netting a pass from Ashley Chappell, 6:07 into the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Marist opened a 4-1 lead, before the Stags netted their next goal, with 11:34 left in the first half, by Ashley Chappell, unassisted. Marist scored again for the 5-2 edge, but Goodwin put in her second of the game with just 1:48 left in the half for a 5-3 Marist lead, which would stand at the intermission.
The Red Foxes struck first in the second half, scoring a pair of goals in the first 91 seconds for the 7-3 advantage. Chappell netted her second of the game 7:15 into the half, on a pass from Erin Rigby, to bring the Stags back within three goals. Chappell netted the Stags next goal, on a free position shot, at 21:02, after causing a Marist turnover as they attempted to clear the ball.
Marist answered at 20:38 to push the advantage back to three, 8-5. Lauren Chatnik kept the score there with a stop of a point blank shot by the Red Foxes with 20:00 to play. Abbey Goodwin got the goal back for the Stags, scoring at 17:31, on a pass from Kristen Ryan. Marist answered with 11:49 left, pushing its lead back to three goals, 9-6, and added another, at the 9:46 mark.
Amy Neville tried to jumpstart the Fairfield come back, netting her first of the game, on a pas from Rigby, with 9:13 to play. Rigby won the ensuing draw, which led to a Neville look that was stopped by the Red Foxes goalie. Marist cleared the ball successfully and got the goal back at 7:29, for the 11-7 lead. Marist scored at 5:49 for a five-goal lead, 12-7, its largest of the game.
The Stags again looked to mount a rally as Neville netted a pass from Rebecca White with 5:02 left in the game, to make the score 12-8. However, Marist notched the last goal of the game, with 3:21, for the 13-8 advantage, the final tally.
Marist will advance to face LeMoyne on Sunday for the conference crown.
