The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team was chosen to finish second in the Preseason Poll of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League head coaches, announced Tuesday by the conference office.

Stags senior captain Sarah Masterson was one of three Stags named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. Teammates Katie von Hoffmann, a junior, and sophomore Abbey Goodwin joined her on the preseason squad.

Masterson ranks second all-time at Fairfield with 95 draw controls and is 19 shy of tying Kristina Sullivan for the school record. She is also one of the Stags top offensive threats, netting 53 goals in her first three seasons, including 22 a year ago.

Von Hoffman is the lynchpin of the Stags defensive unit, earning All-MAAC Second Team accolades last season. She has played 33 games during her first two seasons, starting in 31 of those games. She has totaled 59 ground balls and 34 caused turnovers during her career. As a sophomore she recorded 22 caused turnovers and had 39 ground balls.

Goodwin made an immediate impact on the Stags program, becoming just the second Stag to earn MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, as well as being named All-MAAC Second Team. She tied for the team lead with 41 goals, as well as dishing out five assists. She was a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, first earning the honor for her six-goal, one-assist effort in a win over Wagner.

Defending champion LeMoyne was tabbed to win the league, earning 58 points in the poll. The Stags were next, tied with Canisius, earning 48 points, while Marist was tabbed fourth with 43 points. Manhattan was selected to finish fifth, with 31 points, followed by Iona and Siena, 23 points, and Niagara, 14 points.

The Stags open the 2007 campaign at Villanova on Saturday, February 24, before opening at home, Monday, February 26, against in-state rival Yale at 5 p.m.
