Women's Soccer Knots 14th Ranked Colorado 1-1
Sep 2, 2007The Fairfield University women's soccer team gave 14th ranked Colorado all it could handle Sunday in the championship game of the DU Soccer Classic, coming away with a 1-1 double overtime tie. Ahna Johnson and Alex Caram were both named to the All-Tournament Team for the Stags, who went 1-0-1 on the opening weekend of the season.
Johnson scored the Stags lone goal of the game in the 19th minute. Robyn Decker fed a ball to the feet of Johnson, who went through a defender and put the ball into the upper corner by the far post. The score would remain 1-0 in the Stags favor until the Buffalos scored in the 51st minutes.
Brett Maron tied the school single-game record with 14 saves in the game, including eight in the second half of play. The Stags keeper faced 27 shots in the contest, with 15 coming in the second half of play. Maron made a pair of saves in the overtime periods, including deflecting a shot wide midway in the first overtime period.
Fairfield had the better scoring opportunities in the overtime, with near goals coming during each period. Amanda Vargo came free with the ball on the near sideline, beat a defender and put a shot at the near post. The Colorado keeper, Kirstin Radlinksi left her feet and was just able to put a hand on the ball to punch it wide.
In the second overtime Janna Breitenwischer won a header against Radlinski and the ball rolled toward the near post. Casey Frobey nearly put a foot on it, but at the last second a CU defender was able to push the ball out of bounds, to preserve the tie.
The Stags are off to their best start since 2001, when the team opened 2-0. Fairfield returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they travel to Seton Hall, before opening at home on Friday, hosting Colgate at 7 p.m. on Lessing Field.
