Cavallaro Leads Stags To 3-0 Win Over Colgate
Sep 7, 2007
The Fairfield University women’s soccer team scored
three-second half goals to earn a 3-0 (box score) win
over visiting Colgate University in the teams home opener.
The Stags improve to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Raiders fall to
1-2-0.
Fairfield controlled the tempo in the first half out shooting the
visitor 10-1, but could not convert. Colgate keeper Carly
Sousa made seven of her 11 total saves in that first period, to
keep her team in the game.
The second half began the same way, with neither team being able to
convert chances. Chrissie
Sidie finally broke the tie in the 54th minute.
Nicole
Cavallaro fed the ball across the 18-meter box to
Sidie, who punched the ball up into the air and into the upper
corner of the goal. Colgate, which took six second half
shots, challenged in the second half, but could not take advantage
on their chanced.
Cavallaro played a role in the insurance goals as well. In
the 87th minute she took a pass from Kelly
Steele and pushed it ahead to Casey Frobey who shot
past the charging Sousa and put the ball into the opposite corner
on the ground. Cavallaro touched net for the first time as a
collegian 128 seconds later, driving a ball to the opposite post
from a pass of Ahna
Johnson.
Brett
Maron made four saves in the contest to post her
second clean sheet of the season. She now has 19 career
shutouts, one shy of a second-place tie in Stags history.
Fairfield out shot Colgate 23-7 for the game, including a 14-3
advantage in shots on goal. The Stags were called six times
for offsides, the Raiders just three times. Fairfield had a
7-2 advantage in corner kicks, while the Raiders committed more
fouls, 9-8.
The Stags are off for the next week, returning to action on Friday,
Sept. 14, when they play Central Connecticut State. The first
game of the UConn Classic, the two teams will tangle in Storrs,
Conn., beginning at 5 p.m.
