Fairfield, Conn. –

The Fairfield University women’s soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday, defeating non-conference foe Providence College, 1-0, on Lessing Field.  The Stags improve to 3-4-1 on the year, while the Friars fall to 1-6-1.

The game was won on set pieces in the final 12 minutes of play.  Nicole Cavallaro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) put a corner into play for the Stags that Alex Caram (Lexington, Mass.) got her head on and put into the back of the net, for what would be the only goal of the game.

On the other end, 10 minutes later, the Friars earned their only corner kick of the game.  Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) played a dangerous ball into the box, just in front of the line, but Ahna Johnson (Hamden, Conn.) got her head over the attacking players and pushed the ball away, to turn the Friars away.

The clean sheet is the third of the season for Fairfield keeper Brett Maron (Billerica, Mass.), who made two saves in the win.  It marked her 20th career shutout, tying her for second all-time at Fairfield, with Christen Veach, four-and-a-half shutouts shy of the school record.  Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) made five saves in net for the Friars.

Neither team was able to put a shot on net in the first half, with the Stags out shooting the Friars 5-2 in the period.  For the game, the Stags out shot the Friars 14-4.  The Stags earned three corners in the half, in the first half, with each team earning one corner opportunity in the second half.

Fairfield will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 27 when its hosts Wagner College in a non-conference contest.  The game, set for 7 p.m., will be played on Lessing Field.
