Cavallaro's Record Setting Performance Paces Stags To 6-0 Win At Niagara
Oct 7, 2007
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Freshman Nicole Cavallaro set a school record with four assists, and scored the game-winning goal, in helping the Fairfield University women's soccer team defeat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Niagara University, 6-0, this afternoon in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The win, which snaps a two-match losing streak against the Purple Eagles, improves the Stags record to 6-5-1 and 2-0-0 in league play.
Cavallaro received a yellow card in the fourth minute, but did not allow that to slow her down. She netted her third goal of the year, and the game-winner, with an unassisted goal at 12:07, dribbling around a Niagara defender. She than went to work on aiding her teammates and in the process snapping a school record first set in 1996.
Cavallaro's first assist came at 16:05 as she sent a corner kick into the box that Chrissie Sidie headed down for a 2-0 Fairfield advantage. Than 10:55 later, Cavallaro sent a through ball to Casey Frobey, for a 3-0 lead. The fourth goal, and Cavallaro's third assist, came at 32:05, again off of a corner kick. Ahna Johnson corralled the ball in the box and knocked it home. Cavallaro finished off her record breaking day at 57:41 sending a corner kick to the head of Johnson, for the final goal of the day.
MT Church scored the Stags fifth goal, at 48:33, as she converted a penalty kick. It was her second PK goal of the season.
The offensive production was impressive, the Stags second six-goal output in its last four games, but perhaps more impressive was the defensive effort put forth, backstopped by Brett Maron. Niagara finished the game out shooting the Stags 24-16, and with an 11-10 advantage in shots on goal. The Purple Eagles also held an advantage in corner kicks, 8-7 in the contest.
Maron posted her fifth shutout of the year, in stymieing one of the most potent offenses in the league. She made 11 saves in the contest, her third game this year with 10 or more stops. Maron has now posted 22 career clean sheets, 2.5 shy of tying Anne Lyons for the school record, 24.5.
Cavallaro broke the single-game assist record of Kelli Hurley and Maureen Miller. Hurley recorded three assists in an Oct. 22, 1996 win over Manhattan, while Miller accomplished the feat in a home win over Iona, Oct. 3, 2001.
Niagara (6-5-0; 1-1-0) started Sarah Stephens in goal. She allowed four goals, and made one save, in the first half. Ashleigh Bowers replaced her at halftime and made three saves, while allowing two goals, in her 45 minutes of action.
The Stags return home, where they are 3-0 this season, to host Siena on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. on Lessing Field, as they continue MAAC play. That begins a three-game MAAC homestand, which includes the Stags hosting Marist on Sunday, Oct. 14, and Iona, Friday, Oct. 19.
