SoccerBuzz Names Cavallaro To National Team Of The Week
Oct 9, 2007
After a record setting performance on Sunday the honors continue
to roll in for Fairfield University women’s soccer player Nicole
Cavallaro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) The rookie was
named to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of
the Week, announced Tuesday afternoon.
The SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week honors the players
that have the best week nationwide. Cavallaro is one of 18
players honored this week, including players from Notre Dame, UCLA,
Boston College, and North Carolina, among others. She is the
first player in the program’s history to be selected to the
Elite Team of the Week.
Cavallaro, who was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
(MAAC) offensive player of the week on Monday, tallied nine points
over the course of two MAAC games during the weekend. On
Friday, in a 2-1 win over Canisius, the forward tallied the first
goal of the game, breaking up a 0-0 tie in the 52nd minute.
She than fed Casey Frobey in the 67th minute for the Stags
game-winning goal.
The New Hyde Park Memorial graduate was even more impressive in
the Stags win over Niagara on Sunday. She received a yellow
card in the fourth minute and than went to work. She tallied
what would turn out to be the game-winning goal in the 13th minute,
dribbling around a defender and scoring unassisted. She than
went to work on aiding her teammates and in the process snapping a
school record.
Cavallaro's first assist came at 16:05 as she sent a corner kick
into the box that Chrissie Sidie headed down for a 2-0 Fairfield
advantage. Than 10:55 later, Cavallaro sent a through ball to
Casey Frobey, for a 3-0 lead. The fourth goal, and
Cavallaro's third assist, came at 32:05, again off of a corner
kick. Ahna Johnson corralled the ball in the box and knocked
it home. Cavallaro finished off her record-breaking day at
57:41 sending a corner kick to the head of Johnson, for the final
goal of the day.
Cavallaro four assists broke the single-game assist record of
Kelli Hurley and Maureen Miller. Hurley recorded three
assists in an Oct. 22, 1996 win over Manhattan, while Miller
accomplished the feat in a home win over Iona, Oct. 3, 2001.
The Stags are 6-5-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in MAAC play, and begin
a three-game homestand this Friday, at 7 p.m., when they host
Siena. Fairfield will also host MAAC rival Marist on Sunday,
again at 7 p.m. and also on Lessing Field.
