Marist Earns 2-1 Overtime Win To Hand Women's Soccer First MAAC Loss

Oct 14, 2007

The Fairfield University women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Marist College this evening on Lessing Field.  The Stags fall to 7-6-1 on the year and 3-1-0 in the league, while the Red Foxes improve to 6-3-2 overall and 3-0-0 in MAAC play.

The game-winning goal came as the first overtime period was winding down.  The referee stopped the clock with just over 40 seconds to play when a foul was called on the Stags outside the box.  Marist blooped the free kick into the box and it was bandied about until Teresa Ferraro was able to touch the ball past the line with 28 seconds to play in the period.

Marist had scored first on a corner kick, as Keri Koegel placed the ball to Ferraro’s head in the10th minute.  The Stags earned the equalizer in the 67th minute of the game.  Janna Breitenwischer fed the ball to the top of the box where Alex Caram drove the bar high over the Marist keeper and just below the cross bar.

Brett Maron took the loss in goal for Fairfield, allowing two goals and making three saves in 99:32.  Her Marist counterpart, Allison Lane, made eight saves, allowing the one goal, to earn the win.

The Stags out shot the Red Foxes 18-14 in the game and had a 9-5 advantage in shots of goal.  The Stags were called for 19 fouls, and Marist 10, while the Red Foxes held an 8-5 advantage in corner kick chances.

Fairfield completes its three-game homestand on Friday, Oct. 19, when MAAC rival Iona visits for a 7 p.m. game.  That contest is the second part of a double-header, in which the Fairfield men will host Canisius at 5 p.m.
