Oct 20, 2007

The Fairfield University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College this afternoon on Lessing Field.  The Stags are now 7-6-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the MAAC, while the Gaels are now 2-13-1 on the year and 0-4-1.

Fairfield controlled the tempo in both overtime periods, putting five shots on goal, that were all stopped by Suzanne Baldissard.  Iona had its best chance in the opening minute of the second overtime, with a scrum in the middle of the box, but committed a foul, allowing the Stags to clear.  The Stags responded with several chances as the period continued, but could not convert.

Iona scored first, as Ali Werner scored in the 59th minute, knocking a ball from just inside the box into the upper corner, over the hands ofBrett Maron.  Iona controlled play for the next few minutes, but Fairfield slowly earned back momentum.

Alex Caram knocked home the equalizer at 65:27, depositing the ball after passes from Casey Frobey and Janna Breitenwischer.

Maron made 10 saves for the Stags, her fourth double-digit effort of the season.  Baldissard recorded eight saves for the Gaels.  Fairfield was out shot 19-17 for the game, but did earn more corners, 5-2.The first half saw several scoring chances for both sides, with the Stags holding a 7-5 edge in shots.  The Stags, who did not put a shot on goal in the first stanza, were called offsides on five occasions.

The Stags best chance came in the 24th minute as Nicole Cavallaro chipped the ball high over the Iona keeper, who had gone to the ground in an attempt to corral the ball.  The Gaels most dangerous first half chance came from the foot of Rachel Bucolo in the 39th minute.  She got around her defender and pushed the ball wide left, past a charging Brett Maron.

Fairfield returns to action on Monday, Oct. 22, when it closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 7 p.m. game at Holy Cross.
