Cavallaro's Hat Trick Returns Stags To Winning Ways, Defeat Holy Cross 4-1
Oct 22, 2007
The Fairfield University women's soccer team found its offensive touch once again Monday night, defeating host Holy Cross 4-1, in the team's final non-conference game of the year. The Stags improve to 8-6-2 with the win, while the Crusaders drop to 3-12-0.
Rookie Nicole Cavallaro recorded the first hat trick of her 16-game collegiate career, and wasted little time in jumpstarting the team's offense. Just 4:25 into the game Alex Caram fed a through pass to Cavallaro 15 yards from the net and she knocked it home to the lower right side of the goal.
The eventual game winner came just under seven minutes later. Brett Maron drove a punt to the feet of Cavallaro, who beat the defenders for her first breakaway goal of the night. Casey Frobey gave the Stags a 3-0 lead in the 26th minute, scoring on a pass from Janna Breitenwischer, from 12 yards out to the lower left corner.
Cavallaro had her second breakaway goal 10:20 into the second half of play, icing the contest. Caram was creditted with the assist, her second of the night, and third of the year.
Maron was strong in goal, as well as earning her second assist of the season. The senior made six saves in playing the entire 90 minutes, while allowing one goal, at 85:08.
Fairfield was out shot once again, 14-13, but held a one shot advantage in shots on goal, 8-7. The Stags also had more corner kick oppurtunities, 5-2, and committed one more foul, 10-9, than the Crusaders.
Jessica Pietrowicz made four saves for the Crusaders, playing the entire contest in net.
Breitenwischer has now recorded seven assists this season, second
on the team, and now tied for 11th place in the program's
single-season record list. She has 12 career assists, which
is one shy of moving into the all-time top-10 list in that category
in program history.
Frobey's goal was the eighth of the year for the sophomore, tops on the team. It also marked the 20th of her career, moving her into a tie for ninth all-time with Gina Pantuosco.
Fairfield turns its attention back to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Friday night, traveling to Riverdale, N.Y., for a 7 p.m contest with Manhattan College. The Stags will play at Saint Peter's on Sunday, before wrapping up the regular season at home the following weekend, hosting Loyola and Rider.
