Breitenwischer's Second Half Goal Gives Stags 1-0 Win At Manhattan

Oct 26, 2007

The Fairfield University women's soccer team took advantage of a Manhattan College mistake and earned a key 1-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win in Riverdale, N.Y. on Friday night.  The win improves the Stags to 9-6-2 on the year and 4-1-1 in conference action, while the Jaspers fall to 6-6-4 overall and 3-3-1 in league play.

Janna Breitenwischer tallied her first game-winning goal of the year at 56:12, netting a pass from Nicole Cavallaro, after a Jasper miscue.  It would be the only goal of the game, and all that the Stags defense would need.

Brett Maron, who faced only two shots on net and stopped them both, posted her seventh clean sheet of the season.  One of her two stops on the night came with 21 seconds to play, and iced the key win for Fairfield.  The Stags defensive unit allowed only four shots on the night, with just two being put on goal.  Fairfield took nine shots, with three on goal.

Fairfield and Manhattan entered the game tied in the MAAC standings with 10 points apiece.  The win moves the Stags into a third place tie with Niagara, with 13 points, one behind Loyola, who defeated Siena Friday, and two behind first place Marist, who shutout Rider.

Cavallaro's assist was the 12th of her rookie season and putting her alone in fourth place for the most assists in a single-season in program history.  She is also now just one assist shy of cracking the career assist top-10 list at Fairfield.

Maron also moved within a stones throw of setting a career school record.  She now has 24 career shutouts, 0.5 shy of the all-time record set by Anne Lyons, who notched 24.5 during her 1997-2000 playing career.  Maron has at least three games remaining in her career to earn the record breaking shutout.

The Stags return to action on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Saint Peter's in a league contest set for 1 p.m.
