
Cavallaro Named MAAC Rookie Of The Year

Fairfield University freshman Nicole Cavallaro was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's soccer Rookie of the Year, announced this evening at the pre-tournament banquet on the campus of Marist College. Cavallaro headlines five Stags named First Team All-MAAC and two Stags named to All-MAAC Second Team.
Cavallaro becomes the second Stags in as many years (Casey Frobey) to earn the top honor for rookies. She finished the regular season as the leagues leading scorer with 30 points. She is tops in the nation with 16 assists, a number that also sets a school single-season record. Also voted to the All-MAAC Rookie Team, Cavallaro has netted seven goals this season, including two game-winners.
Along with Cavallaro, four other Stags were selected to the All-MAAC First Team. MT Church (Centennial, Colo.) earned the first team selection for the second consecutive season. The senior started all 20 games as a defender for the Stags, and converted both of her penalty kick chances. Classmate Alex Caram (Lexington, Mass.) was also selected to the first team for the second consecutive season. The midfielder is the team's third leading scorer, netting seven goals and dishing out three assists. She ranks among the program's best in career goals, assists and points, entering the tournament.
Juniors Robyn Decker (Cheshire, Conn.) and Ahna Johnson (Hamden, Conn.) were also voted onto the first team by the leagues head coaches. For Decker it is her first All-MAAC selection, after earning All-MAAC Tournament Team honors last season. Decker started all 20 games for the Stags this season, recording a pair of assists, and playing a role in seven shutouts. For Johnson, the first team selection is her second in as many years. The midfielder netted five goals and added two assists for 12 points in starting each of the Stags 20 contests.
Brett Maron (Billerica, Mass.) and Casey Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) rounded out the postseason selections for Fairfield, being voted to the All-MAAC Second Team. Maron, a senior, posted a career-best 103 saves this season, with a save percentage of .837. She notched seven shutouts and boasts a goals-against average of 0.97. For Frobey, the selection is her second in her collegiate career. She is the top goal scorer in the MAAC, touching net 11 times in the regular season, including four game-winning tallies. She is second on the team, and third in the MAAC, with 26 points.
Fairfield posted an 11-6-3 overall mark during the regular season, going 6-1-2 in conference action. The second-seed in the MAAC Tournament, the Stags will take on number-three Loyola in the 4 p.m. semifinal on Friday.
