Fairfield Falls 2-0 Loyola In MAAC Semifinal

Nov 9, 2007

The Fairfield University women's soccer team ended its season with a 2-0 loss at the hands of number-three Loyola College in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The teams played a scoreless first half, a week after tying 2-2 in double-overtime in their regular season meeting.  The first third of the second half was scoreless as well, until the Greyhounds Colleen Kinealy broke the tie at 61:35 on a ball that was fed to her by Christina Gomez.

Alex Caram nearly tied the game with a shot from 20-yards out with just under 15 to play in the half, but Brittany Henderson knocked over the cross bar.  The ensuing corner kick gave the Stags another chance, but a Loyola defender stepped in front and the ball went out for another corner kick, which landed harmlessly in the keepers hands.

Gomez scored an insurance goal at 77:38, touching the ball around a defender and chipping the ball over a charging Brett Maron.

A Stags corner kick with seven minutes to play, bounced off the cross bar and out of bounds.  With less than three minutes to play Fairfield had several more chances from corner kicks.  Henderson deflected a ball high on the first chance and a Caram header was cleared by a defender on the post at the goal line.

Maron made three saves in the contest, giving her 376 for her career, second all-time in the program's history.  Henderson recorded four saves in net for the Greyhounds.

Loyola out shot the Stags 12-9 for the contest, while Fairfield held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Janna Breitenwischer missed the game with a sprained ankle, and therefore finishes tied for the program record for starts, with 77.

The Stags finish the year with an 11-7-3 overall record.
