Cavallaro Named SoccerBuzz Freshman All-America Third Team
Jan 7, 2008
Fairfield University freshman women’s soccer player Nicole
Cavallaro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) was named to the SoccerBuzz
Freshman All-America Third Team, as well as earning Third Team
All-Northeast Region and All-Freshman team accolades. Senior
goal keeper Brett Maron (Billerica, Mass.) was also named to the
All-Northeast Region Third Team.
“I am very happy for both Nicole and Brett to be recognized
for the seasons that they had for our program this fall,”
said third-year head coach Jim O’Brien. “The
awards are also a statement on the level of success our program has
achieved these last few years and where we are headed in the
seasons to come.”
A graduate of New Hyde Park Memorial High School, Cavallaro was
named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the
Year, as well as being named to the All-MAAC First Team and
All-MAAC Rookie Team. She led the team in scoring with 30
points on the year, including a team-best 16 assists. The
assist total is the single-season school record, while her 30
points ties her for the sixth-best single-season effort in program
history.
Cavallaro is just the second player in program history to earn
Freshman All-America accolades, joining Pamela Cluff (1998).
She becomes the fifth player to earn All-Northeast Freshmen Team
honors, and the second in as many years. Cavallaro and Maron
give the Stags 13 all-time selections to SoccerBuzz All-Northeast
Region teams since 1996.
For Maron the honor is her second in as many seasons, as she earned
All-Northeast Second Team honors after her junior season. A
graduate of Billerica High School, Maron was named to the All-MAAC
Second Team with 106 saves and seven shutouts. She finished
her career second all-time in program history with 24 shutouts, and
third with 34 career wins. Maron finished her career with 377
saves, second all-time in program history.
The Stags posted an 11-7-3 record and finished second in the MAAC,
with a 6-1-2 record. It marked the third straight season that
the Stags have advanced to at least the MAAC Tournament semifinal
and the 11 wins is the most since the 2001 team captured 13
victories.
