Women's Soccer Captures Puma Raider Invitational With 3-1 Win Over Temple

Aug 31, 2008

The Fairfield University women's soccer team captured its third in-season tournament crown in the last three seasons with a 3-1 win over Temple at the Puma Raider Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y.  The Stags improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Owls dropped to 0-2.

Fairfield defeated host Colgate on Friday, 1-0, and the Raiders knocked of Marist 1-0 in overtime on Sunday, to make the Stags the one undefeated team in the four-squad event.  Fairfield won the DU Soccer Classic to open the 2007 season, and won the 2006 BAE Systems Classic at Army.

"Once again we showed our resiliency by coming back from one goal down," said fourth-year head coach Jim O'Brien. "We scored two goals on free kicks to complete the come back, and credit the team, and assistant coaches who are responsible for those plays, for taking advantage of the re-starts."

For the third straight game the Stags allowed their foes to take a 1-0 advantage.  Temple scored its goal, an unassisted tally from Amanda Vogelman, in the 15th minute.

Fairfield would answer, and convincingly, netting all three of its goals in a 10 minute span in the middle of the first-half.

Adrienne Boyer continued her strong weekend, netting her second goal of the tournament, with an unassisted tally at 16:54.  Like her tally on Friday, she put a shot into the upper 90 of the opposite corner.

Rookie Brooke Kravetz netted her first collegiate goal, and is credited with the game-winning tally, as she touched net at 22:58.  Off of a re-start, the Stags had several shots deflected in front of the crease, until Kravetz finally corralled a rebound and buried the shot.  Senior Ahna Johnson wrapped up the scoring for the game at the 26:42 mark, b urying a free kick past an outstretched keeper.

For the first time this season the Stags out shot their opponent, by a total of 12-9.  Fairfield put 10 shots together in the first-half, and had two in the second half, putting one on goal.  Temple had one additional corner kick, 3-2, with all five corner kicks coming in the second half of the contest.

Bridget Nerich made her first collegiate start in net for the Stags, and earned her first win.  She was credited with a pair of saves, both in the first-half, in her 90 minutes of action.

Fairfield will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 7, when it hosts Seton Hall on Lessing Field.  That game will begin at 5 p.m.
